Japanese in the DISK Middle School

Japanese in DISK's middle school (i.e. Grades 6 - 10) follows a carefully structured sequence of topics that prepares students for the IB Diploma Program (DP). The curriculum spirals; students get multiple exposures to topics over the five years of their middle school experience, deepening and extending their understanding as topics are revisited.
Many DISK students use Japanese with native or near native proficiency, while for others it is a second or additional language. Classes are generally separated to better respond to the needs of these two groups.
DISK students have been active participants in a nation-wide haiku contest and, from 2016-17, will also participate in a local speech contest.
Grades 9 and 10 are seen as preparatory years for the IB Diploma Program. Students who have been successful in these courses will find themselves well prepared for any of the IB DP Japanese courses. (Note: DP Japanese courses currently offered at DISK include Language A-language and literature Standard Level(SL)/Higher Level (HL), Language B standard Level (SL)/Higher Level (HL).)
Consistent with DISK's implementation of both the PYP and DP, DISK’s Grade 6-10 Japanese program is built upon a criteria-referenced system of assessment and an inquiry-driven approach to the subject. Grade 6-10 Japanese courses emphasize analytical skills, organizational skills, production and usage of language.
